Brown Baggin' it!

I was going to do a post about mass customization.  But I decided one on lunches was more appropriate.  I know, don't all run out in the street screaming about the lack of a mass customization post.  It will come, it will come.  It has been bouncing around in my head for so long, I need it to leave, so I will write it.

But for now, on to lunches.  We packed them.  Yup, the kids packed their lunches, into the little lunch bags.  We put them into the fridge.  The night before school.  It was like the first day.  Everyone got their backpacks all set to go.  We even remembered to take the lunches out of the fridge this morning.

Bob packed his lunch.  He packed his brief case.  He got up, and put on big boy clothes and went to work.  It really is like the first day of school.  He too remembered his lunch.

We no longer have free lunches at school, because Bob has a job.  It was a happy moment in a perverse way to write the check to the school so the kids could get milk.  I have to pay for my milk.  Yippee.  I know, that is so unlike me.

We may not be out of the woods yet, but today, it looks like we are headed on the right path.  We packed our lunch.

Some other unrelated topics:
*  I snaked a toilet yesterday, because all the plunging in the world wouldn't solve the problem.  It was seriously gross, but I did it, saved a call to the plumber, I am woman, hear me ROAR.
*  Hannah left the freezer open AGAIN.  Seriously, when do they learn?  Oh, and she denied it.
*  Is half way through the party the very, very end?  I don't think so.  I hate people who break the rules.

This door has closed

The post I have dreamed about writing.  I have imagined in my head a million times what I would say, how I would say it.  Now, it all seems sort of flat.  Now that it has happened, it is sort of anti-climatic.

Bob got a job.  He actually got 2 offers.  Since you can't have 2 full-time jobs he had to choose.  Both offers had their pluses and minuses.  In the end he chose the one he wanted most, in spite of the fact that it was not really more money.  In this economy, he got 2 offers, and potentially, had the timing worked out he could have had 3.

There was a safe, comfortable choice and a risky, high potential choice.  When we came out here, we took a risk.  I think we were a bit cavalier about the whole thing.  Things were bright and shiny in Connecticut.  We had the world by the balls.  Nothin' bad would ever happen to us.  This whole experience has been humbling in that respect.  It doesn't really matter how good you are, shit happens.

So, here we are, faced with the challenge of choosing between risky and safe.  We chose risky once, and it didn't work out so well for us.  So, the intelligent choice would be to chose safe right?  The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. That said, no one ever got rich or had a great opportunity by playing it safe.  Playing it safe means that you are going to do the same thing over and over.  Didn't we just say that was the definition of insanity?

We went round and round about this, one minute safe would be the winner.  The next minute risky would be in the lead.  Risky, safe, risky, safe.  What to do.  At no point did either company make is easy by giving us an offer that was clearly better.

We have learned a lot in the last 24 months, especially the last 12.  It would seem this was some sort of final test, to see if we got it.  If we understood.  I don't know if we understood, or if we made the right choice.  Time will tell.  Since no one ponied up to let me borrow/buy their life decoder ring, we chose.

We chose the way we always have, risky.  Because well, Bob was lookin' for a job when he got this one.  We hope and pray that this time it will work out better than last time.  Perhaps last time was a fluke.  This isn't the first risk we have taken.  Generally they have paid off well for us.

So, keep praying for us.  We will keep praying for you.  Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who supported us during this difficult time.  We truly love and appreciate everyone of you.  Seriously, we would not have made it if it wasn't for you.  You know who you are!

Celebrate

Don't get to excited, we didn't celebrate a job offer, but after 5 long, dry months, it seems like it might be starting to rain.  So, we celebrated.  This process of finding a new opportunity has been hard on all of us.  Not just Bob, not just me, but the kids too.  Since we have had a lot of good news on the job front, we decided it was time to celebrate the win.

We went to Culvers, toasted our current good fortune with milk shakes and spritenaide.  We ate in a restaurant where they bring you your food.  Yes, you order off a menu on the wall at the front of the store, but hey, someone brought me my food.  This is the first time we have spent money to go out to eat as a family since all of this started.  It was a fun surprise for everyone.

We hope that this brush with good luck continues, that we are able to put this experience behind us and focus on the future, soon.  I have said it once, I will say it again, pray for us to make good choices, and to be able to find the opportunity that puts in the right place.  But, most of all pray for a job offer.

Change

I pray for change.  Every single day, I pray for change.  I do it sometimes hundreds of times a day.  I pray for change.  Many of you who know we well, know that I hate change.  I announce this on a fairly regular basis.  Interestingly enough I am praying for change, at the same time I am announcing I hate change.

So, perhaps it isn't change I dislike so much as just the unknown.  I am not a fan of not knowing what to expect.  Yet, life changes on a dime.  One minute you think everything will be the same and something happens.  Something dramatic, and your life is forever altered.  The course you thought you would take is no longer the same.  Usually at some point in the journey your are glad you are where you are, but I wonder how much of that is a reaction to the fact that being any place else is sort of not a choice.

Today I pray for change, because I no longer wish to be here.  I know that getting to where we are getting to requires that we pass through here, I am done with it and want to move on.  So, perhaps tomorrow is the day everything changes?  Probably not, but maybe soon.

New Post on Sunday

So much has been happening lately, I haven't really had time to process it all.  Not the least of which, my Mom has been visiting me.  It has been great fun to see her and hang out with her.  The kids enjoy visiting with Grandma as well.  So, I haven't really had much time to write anything.

Tuesday, I pretty much had given up hope.  I was feeling like perhaps all my positive attitude, prayers and confidence that everything would be alright was just bullshit.  I was starting to think maybe I was drinking too much of the Kool-Aid and not dying enough yarn with it.

I was talking to my good friend MJ and she told me that the bible says to ask and keep asking.  So, we kept asking.  She said she would ask more often as well.  Perhaps between the two of us we could get through.  Maybe things would turn around.   While, I do not know if anything will come of anything, which is why I really don't want to talk about it... something, a lot of somethings happened.  It looks like maybe everything will be alright.  Perhaps it wasn't so much bullshit.

I want things to solidify before I really talk about it, but please ask for us to end this difficult period.  Pray for us to make good decisions and good choices about our next move.  Most of, ask for there to be a job offer!

We are currently even

Yesterday in my email I found a notice from Zillow, stating that my house was now worth what I paid for it.  That was very comforting.  So, I decided to see what homes Zillow was using for comps, doing this I learned that one of my neighbors is in pre-foreclosure.

Pre-foreclosure, is when the owner lists the house for sale and trys to sell it before the foreclosure proceedings start.  There is one house on the street that Zillow says it is on that is for sale.  It has been for sale since before I moved in here.  Almost 3 years.  I wonder if it is that house.  I wonder if pre-foreclosure homes would have a sign in front of them, or if there is some special market of homes that are in this situation.

Needless to say, our current situation sort of stresses me out a little.  We are ok, right now, but by the grace of God go I, as we could find ourselves in that same boat.  I like to think that it is pretty unlikely, that Bob not will find a job before the money runs out.  That if it does run out, my mother will save us.  I like to think we have a safety net.

The houses we live in are the type that people were buying and sinking tons of money into back in the day.  There are people in this neighborhood who drive fancy cars and spend like there is no tomorrow.  I tell myself, it is one of those over-leveraged types that is in this situation.  But, the reality is that the family that this is happening to it probably really nice, and super stressed about it.

While I ask God everyday to help us solve our problem, to help us find peace.  I think I will also start asking him to help the family, who ever they are, in pre-foreclosure.  I imagine he has access to the foreclosure list and can figure out who to send the good thoughts.  If you have a moment, we would appreciate any prayers you have for our situation, we hope that we land in the right place, quickly.

Tomorrow

Well, it happened.  Bob took my phone.  He got over the fact that is was pink.  He changed my ring tone, he changed my voice message.  This was supposed to be my "reward" for moving here, justified by the fact that the school might need me.  Now, it is his.  My pink phone.

I realize that the only thing I can control is my attitude, so I am trying very hard not to be angry about this.  He needs a phone so that he can contact people when he is out networking.  I understand that we can not afford to buy another phone.

So, for the next five minutes, or how ever long it takes me to write this entry, I am going to wallow in the fact that in the last 18 months, I have had to give up pretty much everything in my life.  I lost my lovely kitchen in my lovely house.  I left my friends.  I lost my life, where I was so entrenched, that I had people calling me and offering me jobs.  I have now lost my computer and my phone.  I gave up all of this, so that Bob could have the job he really wanted, only once he had it he realized he didn't really want it.  I lost my gym membership, so now I am stressed (I eat when stressed) and I can not work out anymore.

Most likely, once the dust settles and we are in a more peaceful place, he will be making less, so I may not get much of what I gave up back.  I realize it is for the most part stuff and things, with a small sprinkle of relationships.  I realize that the relationship aspect will replicate itself here.  But for right now, for today, I want my old life back.  I want to be pissed at B because she is a bitch.  I want to be annoyed by the stupid MOMS club.  I want to be concerned about the quality of the education my kids are getting.  I want to cook in my kitchen.  I want to go to the gym.  I want to go visit M, T, K, G, E, or C because I love them and want to hang with them.

So, just for today, I want my old life back.  Tomorrow, I will resume my regularly scheduled programing and go back to being positive and making the best of things.  Tomorrow, I will believe that everything is gonna be alright, so don't worry.  Tomorrow, or maybe even a little bit later today.

Thanks world

In the past month I have received emails, phone calls, yarn, massages, candy, and numerous other gifts of support, both material and non-material. It has been so amazing to me the sheer volume of people that have reached out to us and given us tokens of support. May those tokens be gifts to cheer us up or actual job leads and networking contacts. People have volunteered to watch the kids so I could work and Bob could job hunt. Friends have dropped by meals, just cuz. We have had unemployment suppers with our other unemployed friends, and because of that, are starting to make new friends.

There are so many people praying for us, both friends and folks we have never met, it is amazing. The power of G-Ds will is mind boggling. Like tulips pushing through the hard ground in spring, I feel the power of things that are good, pushing through the bad. Eventually, those tulips have to blossom, and we have to end the uncertainty.

Our kids have embraced our new financial situation with great creativity. It is amazing the things these kids have figured out how to do for free. They are worried and scared, but for the most part, everyone is pitching in.

So, I know I am greedy, but please keep the support coming, and PLEASE, send us a job. We try and pay it back in ways we can right now, and totally admit we haven't been so good at paying it forward. We will get better. But, for now, thank you world for the help! Thank you for slowing the kicking down so that we can catch our breath!

Back to Reality

Well, my vacation from my life is over. It was so much fun! My mom took really good care of us, and we had a blast playing tourist in Cali. It seemed like everyday was better than the next. This is unusual, as I generally am a little bored when I am in California. But, we actually left with stuff to we wanted to do, being undone... waiting for us for next time!

Now that I am home, the house looks great, Bob did a wonderful job cleaning up. It is weird to see it because it does not seem like my house. It still doesn't seem like home... that said, there were flowers on my front porch. I had always planned to put some flowers there, but given our current economic crisis, I haven't wanted to spend the money. Well, as some RAK, someone left flowers on my front porch. Amazingly cool, and nice. I will have to play detective in the neighborhood to see who did it... or perhaps one of my other friends. It was a very nice pick me up.

I still feel sort of overwhelmed and scared about the future. I wish that we knew what was going to be...

They strike again, part 2

Unfreakin' believable, but the swine have come back to the well for more. I apologize to swine everywhere for insulting them. I have met the Devil. I suppose at the end of the day, you do what ever it takes to get the Devil out of your life.

That said, some good happened yesterday, I got another package of yarn in the mail. It was so cool and fun to have another surprise in the mail!!!

This morning my husband got a call from a very influential man in his industry. Essentially, to guys who do what he does, it is like getting a call from a rock star. That was pretty cool, so we will see what comes of that.

I guess the right perspective for the day is: 1) got call from rock star, 2) got Devil out of life. All good right?!

They strike again...

***warning, some language might be offensive***

Because I can not say this to the sucktastic douche bags that my husband used to work for:

Dear Joel, Lynn and Leon:

I guess things are really bad for the business right now. I guess that the $3,700 that you legally owe us, under IL state law, is going to materially impact the business, because it is so much more important to you than it is to us. You can have it. I don't want it, even though my family could live off it for a couple of months while we look for another job. You take it. When you put gas in your fancy car and take your wife out to dinner, remember who is paying for that.

The cost to us emotionally, is not worth the argument about it. We want to put this horrible situation behind us and move on. We will win.

This bs about the fact that the employment contract my husband signed isn't valid because he worked for a different division is all smoke and mirrors and another example of your underhanded unethical business dealings. Grasping at straws are we? You told us that you had the authority to offer him the job. I have to believe that once you start to believe in people and treat them with respect, you will get that back. Until you can do that, well, then you will always believe that you are being taken advantage of...

Remember, you are an evil troll, your in-laws are also evil trolls, and the illness and bad things that come to you are created by the evil that you have enveloped yourself in.

I am looking forward to getting my bright, talented, honest, loyal and wonderful husband back from the very dark place that you people pushed him into.

Enjoy the money we have given you. I won't itemize the amounts, but it is a fairly substantial amount. I am glad that you feel your endeavor is so important as to have us pay into it. May the karma that you have sewn in how you have dealt with us soon come back for you to reap.

Susanna

With this I hope that I will be able to move on, and focus on the next steps on this journey!

My husband came home naked

Well, they stripped him of his equipment yesterday. All my husband's electronics were taken from him, his computer, his blackberry, his keys. He said it felt naked when he walked out, like everyone could tell that he was unemployed... well, not yet... but after tomorrow.

It is interesting how much of his identity is wrapped up in having consistent access to his email and phone. He was so upset that they took his phone, he told me he tried to hide it from them, so he could keep it until Friday. I think it would have been humane to let him keep the badges of his job until the end. What did they think he would do today that he couldn't have already done yesterday. How stupid do they think he is?

My husband is now President of the company in title only. He has been completely stripped of power and prestige. Why do they make him continue to come in? It seems like some sort of mid-evil torture. I guess people don't understand the impact of their actions.

While it is not good mojo to be negative, I sort of hope that the karma that these people have created for themselves comes back around. I also hope that the fact that we are good people, generous almost to a fault, will help us land swiftly on our feet.

Reconnecting

As part of the whole job loss thing, we are starting to reconnect with old friends. So many people have reached out to us, it has been amazing. It is just good to hear from all these people, some doing well and others also in the throws of unemployment. I am sure as the days go on, it will be nice to know that there is this group of people that care.

It is scary, because it sounds like jobs are going to be very hard to come by. It seems like seeds of growth are germinating, but it will be a long time coming before anything opens up. This is sort of concerning.

That said, I knit like crazy. It seems counter-intuitive to put pointy sticks in the hands of a crazed, stress-out mommy, but it really does help. Right now I am making a panda for Sam. It is a birthday present of sorts. I am also working on some socks. They are from a pattern for my May sock club, but may also be the June pattern. I didn't like the June pattern, so I guess I have another month before I have to start another pair.

On a Tuesday it Happened

After 9 months of worrying, fretting, and generally being scared, it finally happened. Bob lost his job. In a perverse way it is a good thing, because now we don't have to worry about him losing it any more. But, now we are a family of 5 with no income.

Bob was so despondent about his job, it was a very frightening period. The owners never respected what he did for them, and they were so negative all the time. Definitely from the school of management by fear and loathing. It just doesn't work, and Bob began to believe that he was worthless. I guess eventually you throw your hands up and do what you are told. Bob did some amazing things for them in the short 9 months he was there, he really could have turned this business around if they would have let him. OH well. The part that is so hard for me to cope with is that he now feels like a failure, when the reality is that the owners failed him. Now we have to fight with them about the severance. It never ends.

I started this blog when Mac started Kindergarten, didn't touch it again until we started this process of coming to Chicago and moved. I didn't want to say anything when all of the stuff was going down, but now I think I need to let it all out. These people stole my husband from me. They took the father of my children and left me to pick up the pieces. I hope that we are blessed with an opportunity that brings us back to a place where we are content. I hope we don't have to move again.
